Ikat Craft
Chitki of Andhra Pradesh
About
Ikat, locally called Chitki in Andhra Pradesh, is one of the oldest and most intricate dyeing and weaving techniques in India. The uniqueness of Ikat lies in the tie-and-dye method, where the yarns are tied, dyed and then woven to create patterns with blurred yet beautiful edges. This complex process requires precision, patience and artistic skill.
In Kothuru, Palnadu district, weaving has been a traditional occupation, with families engaged in handloom work for generations. Ikat weaving here not only provides livelihoods but also preserves the cultural identity of the region. Patterns often include geometric shapes, floral motifs and symbolic designs that hold meaning within the community.
Though Ikat has global recognition today, artisans in Kothuru face challenges such as high production costs, competition from power looms and a decline in younger generations taking up weaving. Government schemes, cooperatives and training programs are now encouraging artisans to sustain this heritage craft while adapting designs for modern markets.
